How to Choose the Right Computer as a Graphic Design Professional

Choose the right computer as a graphic design professional

Look, we get it. When you start shopping for a computer, especially one that you’ll end up using for work as intensive as graphic design, it can be hard to know what to pay attention to.

sponsored message

Luckily, you’ve found the gurus of tech shopping so let us lead the way so you can get exactly what you need so you can focus on the important part: creating incredible works of art. So if you’re looking for the best graphic design computer, let’s go!

Hard Drive

If you ever want to save any of the work that you’ve put all of your time and effort into, you’re going to need a hard drive that can compensate for the large files you’re working on. You can typically find two different types of hard drives in computers:

  • Solid State Drive (SSD)
  • Hard Disk Drive (HDD)

While they work the same way essentially, there can be some big differences between them. The biggest one is the price difference. HDD can be much cheaper than an SSD, so if cost is a concern, be sure to remember that.

Also, while an SSD is more durable, it does not offer as much storage as an SSD does, although, with ever-improving technology, this gap is getting smaller and smaller.

The biggest benefit of an SSD is the speed. A computer with an SSD inside of it will boot and even function faster than one with an HDD inside. This doesn’t mean you should avoid one over the other by any means. If you choose a computer with an HDD inside, you can always upgrade later on.

Monitor

While this may not apply to every computer you’ll find, there are some that when you buy it, will only come with a tower, leaving it up to you to buy a monitor. See our top monitors post here.

While the monitor you choose is solely up to you, be sure that you choose one that provides at least 4K resolution. 4K is quickly becoming the standard resolution for many monitors and anything less than that will make any image you work on dull.

Also, while it might cost more, a monitor with in-plane switching (IPS) tech should be a must-have for any graphic design professional.

GPU

The Graphics Processing Unit, otherwise known as the GPU, is a vital component of any designer’s computer. This should be the first thing you check whenever you consider buying a computer.

If your budget allows for it, it is a great idea to invest your money in the best GPU that you can afford. This way, the images that you create or work on will look the absolute best they can on your monitor, which as you read before, should be no less than 4K.

Memory

Memory or RAM helps keep your computer running fast and being able to handle multiple applications without any lag.

Good computers start with at least 16 GB of memory. This will be able to support multiple applications at once and help everything move smoothly.

CPU

sponsored message

The “brains” of the outfit, the central processing unit, also known as the CPU play a major role in the operation of your new computer. For designer work, you want to shoot for at least 2Ghz or more.

The applications and processes that you’re going to be running on a day-to-day basis can be extremely intensive so making sure that you have the internal components that make it run smoothly are essential.

Best Desktop Graphic Design Computers Right Now

1. iMac (24-inch, 2021) (Editor’s Choice)

Apple iMac 27"
Apple iMac (24-inch, 2021) Image credit: Apple

The best computer for graphic design

CPU: Apple M1 8-core chip  | Graphics: 8-core M1 chip | RAM: 8GB – 16GB | Storage: 256GB – 2TB SSD | Display: 24-inch (diagonal) 4.5K Retina display

For the first time since 2012, Apple has given its iMac line a redesign. Available in seven colors, the new 24-inch model is an upgrade over the previous version in almost every way.

With a larger screen, the aforementioned color redesign, plus excellent performance, courtesy of Apple’s M1 chip, the iMac is easily the best computer available for graphic design in 2022. The best part, the price hasn’t changed.

Packaged with a colored keyboard, mouse, and touchpad, the new iMac is thinner and lighter than its previous iteration taking up even less space on your already crowded desk. This makes it our top pick for the best computer for graphic design right now.

Pros

Cons

➕ Excellent screen ➖ Lack of ports continues
➕ Exciting new design ➖ Charging mouse can be awkward
➕ Very good performance

Powerful computer for video editors

CPU: Intel Core i9 | Graphics: NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3070 8GB | RAM: 32GB DDR4 | Storage: 1TB NVMe SSD + 2TB HDD

The MSI Trident AS is probably the most powerful computer for designers, video editors, and 3D artists. Initially, it looks like a gaming beast with a unique and innovative design.

The hardware is set in a way to optimize heat dissipation and make the PC slimmer for a better look and feel. With the inclusion of the RTX 2060 Super graphics card, creatives are guaranteed to have a smooth experience even on 4K monitors. As the design is compact, it is a good choice for users looking for a portable workstation on the go.

3. Microsoft Surface Studio 2

Microsoft Surface Studio 2
Microsoft Surface Studio 2. Image credit: Microsoft / Amazon

The best Windows PC for graphic design

CPU: Intel Core i7-7820HQ | Graphics: Nvidia GeForce GTX 1060 6GB -GTX 1070 8GB | RAM: 16GB – 32GB | Storage: 1TB – 2TB SSD

For far too long, many graphic designers turned to the products that Apple created for their graphic design needs but that left those who loved using Windows 10 out in the cold. Not anymore. The Surface Studio 2 from Microsoft is an excellent all-in-one that is a great alternative to the iMac.

This isn’t just a clone though, Microsoft has added some bells and whistles that the iMac lacks. Most importantly, the 28-inch display comes with a high-resolution as well as a touchscreen, effectively giving you a PC and a tablet. Try as you might, that is not something the iMac from Apple can do.

This doesn’t mean that Microsoft’s PC doesn’t have its downside. With an older quad-core processor from Intel along with an Nvidia GeForce GTX 1060 or 1070, its components are starting to show their age but still provide you with plenty of power.

Pros

Cons

➕ Touch-sensitive display ➖ Expensive
➕ Easy to use vertical hinge ➖ Intel processor starting to show age
➕ Incredible graphics

4. Apple Mac Studio

Mac Studio

Best computer for graphic design with high power

CPU: Apple M1 Max chip / Apple M1 Ultra chip | Graphics: Integrated 24-core / 48-core GPU | RAM: 32GB – 128GB | Storage: up to 8TB

Creative professionals especially appreciate the great computing power of the popular Apple computers, and this Mac Studio model will not disappoint. Depending on preferences, users can configure the Mac Studio into one of the most powerful computers ever created by Apple.

Powered by either an Apple M1 Max chip or a cutting-edge M1 Ultra chip, it’s impressive how little space it takes up. Thanks to its compact chassis, it looks like a stacked Mac Mini.

And despite providing faster GPU performance than the most powerful PC GPU, the M1 Ultra consumes 200 watts less power. Largely due to the efficient architecture of the M1 chips, Mac lovers will highly appreciate this feature in an era of skyrocketing energy bills.

Pros Cons
➕ Configurable  ➖ Pricy
➕ Plenty of ports

The 4K display has an optional 99 percent Adobe RGB color gamut and DCI-P3 99 percent color space, which is useful for anyone who needs color accuracy optimization. And with just the touch of a finger, the screen will fully rotate into portrait mode.
