How to pick the best 1440p monitor

Picking the right 1440p monitor isn’t very hard but there are some things that you should pay attention to when shopping for the right monitor to fit your needs. Otherwise, you could be spending a whole lot of time and money with the wrong monitor.

How To Choose The Best 1440p Monitor

Panel Type

When you start shopping for a new monitor, one of the things you’ll see is the different types of panels that monitor use. Here’s a handy breakdown:

sponsored message

  • TN

For those looking for a budget 1440p monitor, a TN panel, otherwise known as twisted nematic, is a great option because of how affordable they are. This doesn’t mean that they are all affordable as some of the higher-priced options are also the fastest.

The only panels capable of reaching 240 Hz refresh rates, TN panels also come with 1ms response times. In contrast to VA and IPS panels that need to resort to using various techniques for motion blur reduction to emulate a low response time.

  • IPS

IPS (In-plane switching) panels come with the best color accuracy available and emphasize visuals over performance. While they are unable to have response times fewer than 4ms because of tech limitations, they can reach 144 Hz refresh rates and provide great viewing angles.

Manufacturers tend to use motion blur reduction so that the IPS panel is more responsive. A big issue with IPS panels is that they can have issues with blacklight bleed and the contrast could be better.

  • VA

VA panels, also known as Vertical Alignment, are a good balance between TN and IPS panels. They provide the best contrast and the color reproduction is better than TN panels but behind IPS panels.

While they can reach refresh rates of 144 Hz, they can have issues with ghosting because they can have response times that are a tad higher than IPS panels.

Refresh Rate

By measuring the time it takes to redraw the entire screen in seconds, a panel’s refresh rate is measured in Hertz (Hz) and the higher the refresh rate number, the faster the refresh rate.

For example, a refresh rate of 60Hz means that a screen is refreshed 60 times per second. Finding a monitor with a refresh rate of at least 120Hz will reduce the blurring of any images as well as reduce any screen tearing.

Response Time

When you hear the term ‘response time’, what is being talked about is how long a pixel takes to change from one shade of grey to another. Measured in milliseconds, response time indicates how blurry fast-moving images will be and if any ghosting will be seen.

Connectivity

Any good monitor needs to come with plenty of connectivity options and the most popular connections are HDMI and DisplayPort. While either and in many cases both of these options appear on monitors these days, it’s not uncommon to see connectivity options such as DVI or VGA.

Some may even come with USB ports or Thunderbolt options as well. Generally, the types of ports that a monitor will have will be dependent on the cost as monitors that are higher-end generally have more connectivity options.

These are the three best selling 1440p monitors on Amazon right now:

The best budget 1440p monitor

Screen size: 27in | Aspect ratio: 16:9 | Resolution: 2560 x 1440 | Refresh rate: 144Hz | Connectivity: Display Port 1.2, HDMI 2.0, USB 3.0

While the manufacturer may not be known to many, the G27Q from Gigabyte comes with a combination that we always love – great performance and a great price. While the ergonomics might keep things a bit limited, the display does hold its own with its VESA Certified DisplayHDR 400, Adaptive Sync, as well as a fast response time.

At such a great price, the G27Q provides the kind of performance that you would normally find on some higher-priced options including its connectivity by providing two downstream USB ports so that you can connect your peripherals. We almost forgot to mention the best part of Gigabyte’s monitor, that the 27-inch monitor hits the perfect combination of a 1440p resolution with a refresh rate of 144Hz.

The best value 1440p monitor

Screen size: 27in | Aspect ratio: 16:9 | Resolution: 2560 x 1440 | Refresh rate: 144Hz | Connectivity: DisplayPort, HDMI, audio jack

If there is one thing many people look for, other than a great deal, its great value, and the UltraGear Ergo 27GN880-B from LG certainly fits that mold. While the monitor does have its shortcomings such as a missing USB hub or proper HDR, neither issue is so big that it would keep creatives from falling in love with it.

With 1440p resolution and 144Hz refresh rate, whether you’re a gamer or work in creative fields such as video editing, there is a lot to like about the LG monitor. Unlike many other monitors, the ergonomics that are offered are unparalleled. With the impressive Ergo stand, the monitor can not only do the standard adjustments but is also able to extend, retract, and pivot as well. To us, that’s a pretty good value.

Screen size: 27in | Aspect ratio: 16:9 | Resolution: 2560 x 1440 | Refresh rate: 240Hz | Connectivity: DisplayPort, HDMI

Not everyone loves a curved monitor but hear us out. A curved screen can immerse you in whatever you’re doing without adding extra strain to your eyes. One of the nicest things about the Odyssey G7 from Samsung is just that it comes with a beautiful 1440p resolution but that it won’t take up a ton of space on your desk.

The best all-around 1440p monitor

Screen size: 32in | Aspect ratio: 16:9 | Resolution: 2560 x 1440 | Refresh rate: 165Hz | Connectivity: DisplayPort, HDMI, USB

On a 32-inch screen, the 1440p resolution that comes on the Xeneon 32QHD165 from Corsair might not give you the most ideal pixel density, that doesn’t mean that it doesn’t have plenty to make it worthy of appearing on our list.

With a top refresh rate of 165Hz, it can easily be a great option for video editing or a late-night gaming session to unwind at the end of the day. The color gamut support is impressive with 98% DCI-P3, 100% AdobeRGB, and 100% sRGB, meaning that it’s already more impressive than some of the other options on our list. While it can cost a little bit more, features like DisplyHDR 400, a response time of 1ms, and AMD Freesync make it worth the price.

Pros

Cons

➕ Great image quality ➖ DisplayHDR 400 could be better
➕ Impressive color coverage
