3D pens aren’t like the normal pens or pencils that you may use to draw beautiful works of art with. You’re not going to find a 3D pen in a pack of ten anytime soon. So to help you make sure that the 3D pen that you select is the best one for you, let’s take a look at some things to consider.
Wired vs Wireless
Like many great pieces of tech these days, 3D pens can come in two different variations – wired and wireless. Let’s take a closer look at both:
- Wired
Wired 3D pens need to be connected to either your computer through a USB port or plugged into the wall with an AC adapter to use it. The pen is always ready to use but the trade-off is that you have to have it plugged into a power source. A major downside to wired 3D pens is that the cord can sometimes get in the way while you’re using it.
- Wireless
With a rechargeable battery, a wireless pen doesn’t need to be plugged in to use and you have the freedom of being able to work wherever you would like. However, because it has a rechargeable battery, if you forget to charge it in between sessions, you may run into a scenario where the battery dies mid-project.
Filament
A 3D pen works by melting plastic filament to help you create a 3D design. However, not all filaments are the same and there are typically two options available – acrylonitrile butadiene styrene (ABS) and polylactic acid (PLA). The PLA filament also melts at a low temperature and doesn’t create fumes that could be irritating to some. However, PLA filaments do take longer to cool down.
Temperature range/control
On that note, when you decide which filament is for you, you want to make sure that the 3D pen can handle it and the best way is to check the temperature range it can handle. PLA filaments require temperatures between 320-428℉, while ABS need temperatures to be between 356-482℉.
Having good temperature control is especially important. Some options will allow you to increase the temperature one degree at a time while others may allow you to increase in five to ten-degree increments.
Some others won’t offer you a way to adjust the temperature. These pens come with a setting for each type of filament and adjust the temperature accordingly.
Speed
The speed at which the filament is released from the nozzle will you to have much more control over the 3D pen when you use it. A faster speed is great if you’re filling in large areas, allowing you to work faster and slower speeds are good for when you need to do more detailed areas.
A good 3D pen should offer you at least three settings for speed so you can have complete control of the filament rate. Having a pen that makes adjustments easy with a dial or button makes things easier as well.
Cooldown time
3D pens aren’t like traditional pens that you can use all day long. A 3D pen can overheat easily, this makes finding a 3D pen that cools off quickly after use is a key feature to look for so you don’t have to wait forever to finish your design.
